Community Initiatives
From energy independence and food security to local currencies and affordable green housing, there is much to celebrate as we witness a powerful grassroots movement towards what David Korten refers to in The Great Turning as Earth Community. Here are just a few of the community initiatives pioneering the way. We will add more communities as they come onto our radar screen and keep you posted as these communities develop their strategies and actions.
Started in 2004 by three people, and comprised of local neighbors, Sustainable Ballard originally organized around the idea of Ballard becoming the first US town to become energy interdependent. Currently working with over 25 different organizations, Sustainable Ballard invites all people, organizations, and businesses to find their place on the spectrum of responsibility and sustainability. Most recently, Sustainable Ballard has made a pledge to become the first carbon neutral community in the nation.
Boulder, Colorado
Starting in November 2005, Boulder began to educate it's citizens about Peak Oil and has since begun working on a Community Relocalization Plan.
Lawrence Township, New Jersey
Lawrence provides an inspiring example of community sustainability using the Natural Step for Communities as their guide.
Leigh Valley, Pennsylvania
A unique model that brings together individuals, organizations, small businesses, and farmers concerned about the welfare of the greater Lehigh Valley.
Nevada City, California
With the help of an inspired group of community leaders and independent media, Nevada City isn't just localizing their own community.
Port Townsend, Washington
An already progressive town takes on energy independence, food security, and more.
Tompkins County , New York
Ithaca Hours, the local currency, isn't the only initiative in Tompkins County that's creating strong, local community.
